Genesis 17:1 · World English Bible

What this name means

The All-Sufficient One. The God of more-than-enough. Shaddai carries the idea of 'mountain' — unshakeable.

When Abraham was 99 years old and the promise of a son seemed dead, God revealed Himself as El Shaddai. Where you are running on empty, He is more than enough. Where you are exhausted, He has not even begun to be tired.

The promise kept in this name

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:19

How to practice this name today

Four small steps. Don't try to do all of them. Pick one. Do it today.

1.

Name what is lacking, honestly.

Write it down without softening it. God is not afraid of your specific need. Anxiety thrives on vague dread; faith works with concrete asks.

2.

Distinguish need from want.

On the same page, two columns. Be honest. God promises to meet your needs — and is wise about your wants. The act of separating them is itself a prayer.

3.

Thank Him for one provision already given.

Look back over the last seven days. Find one thing — food, sleep, a friend's text. Speak it aloud. Memory builds faith for tomorrow.

4.

Take the next obedient step.

Trust does not mean inaction. Send the email, make the call, post the listing. Then leave the result with Him.
